SCITA Participants Selected

Background:
Spartanburg school districts 1, 2, 5, & 7 were among 12 in the state to receive more than $1.8 million in NCLB funds as part of the South Carolina Department E2T2’s competitive grants program. These grants are to assist projects focused on improving student achievement through technology, assisting students in becoming technologically literate by the end of eighth grade, and encouraging effective technology integration. Spartanburg school districts 1, 2, 5, & 7 created the Spartanburg County Instructional Technology Academy (SCITA).

Rationale/Goal:
The developers of SCITA recognize the need for educators to remain current in educational technology trends/tools, and to develop technology leaders within the teaching profession. SCITA is designed to train teachers in emerging technologies, explore latest research in learning with technology, augment innovative standards-based curriculum, provide opportunity and skills to participate in a larger educational community, and offer professional development to educators to expand the scope and depth of their instructional skills.

Descriptive:
Participants will attend a 3 full day summer session in order to begin collaboration, identify technology skills, and receive emerging technologies. Weekly classes in the fall semester 2009 will consist of hands-on sessions of emerging instructional technologies as well as graduate level coursework focusing on learning and teaching with technology. Monthly technology workshops and collaboration will continue in the spring semester 2010. Also, additional graduate hours will be made available through PBS TeacherLine in the spring 2010 semester.
